The use of enjambment in the thirteenth and fourteenth line creates an idea that the persona is expressing her emotions freely.Īrseneau, M., & Terrell, E. The word ‘twilight’ in the thirteenth line is a symbolism of darkness where the sun is neither rising nor setting. The visual, tactile and auditory imagery used in these lines help readers to visualise the image of the afterlife as said by the persona. The first four lines of stanza two show that once the persona dies, she will not have her human sensory, thus the lines recite that the persona won’t be able to see shadows, feel the rain and hear the birds sing (Hussein & Barzinji, 2014). Stanza two describes the persona’s afterlife. It further emphasizes that the person is giving the loved one a choice to choose from. ‘And if thou wilt’ in the same line indicates repetition. The words ‘remember’ and ‘forget’ in the seventh and eighth line show parallelism. The following lines illustrate that the persona is giving the dearest a choice either to remember or forget the persona (Hussein & Barzinji, 2014). Grass gets stepped on, is exposed to harsh weather and yet it continues to grow, thus it can be construed that the persona wants the loved one to continue growing despite her passing. ‘Green grass’ in the fifth line is a metaphor. The fifth and sixth lines can be interpreted that the persona is telling the loved one that a few tears is sufficient to show endearment just like how the grass can be green with showers and dewdrops. ‘Roses’ in the third line is a symbolism for love and ‘cypress tree’ in the following line represents mourning, as these branches were used in funerals. There are uses of imagery in the third and fourth lines, ‘Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree:’. The ‘s’ sound in these words creates a solemn mood. The repetition of the ‘S’ sound in ‘Sing no sad songs for me’ (Line 2) shows the use of alliteration. The first stanza depicts the loved one’s actions, what the loved one should and should not do after the persona’s passing. The unorganized rhyming symbolizes the persona’s mental instability before her death. This poem has two octaves, each with two quatrains with an ABCB rhyme. Perhaps Rossetti’s illnesses since childhood might have triggered her to ponder about death and afterlife since no one including her thought that she would live a normal lifespan (Arseneau&Terrell, 2019). Other than that, personal factors such as her illnesses might also be a factor for her writing. Christina Rossetti is a Christian, therefore, her belief in life after death and accepting death can be a major influence for her writings (Muhamad, 2019). The themes found in this poem are death, grief, love and life. The poem is a message to the persona’s loved one. The poem is titled Song: When I am Dead, My Dearest. ![]()
